Houston Event to Honor George Floyd’s Legacy with Community Celebration

Community members in Houston are invited to gather Memorial Day weekend to honor the life and legacy of George Floyd during a special celebration focused on remembrance, unity, and community healing.

The George Floyd Memorial Day Celebration is scheduled for Monday, May 25, 2026, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Tom Bass Regional Park III, located at 15103 Cullen Blvd. Organizers with the KDTC Foundation say the event will bring together families, local leaders, advocates, and residents for an afternoon of reflection and fellowship.

The free event will include music, food vendors, community resources, elected officials, and a balloon release honoring Floyd’s memory. Organizers describe the gathering as both a tribute and an opportunity for the community to continue conversations surrounding justice, accountability, and preserving Floyd’s legacy.

Floyd’s death in 2020 sparked worldwide protests and renewed conversations about racial justice and police reform. In Houston, where Floyd grew up, community members have continued organizing events and memorials to honor his impact and keep attention on calls for change.

The celebration also follows renewed local conversations surrounding public memorials dedicated to Floyd, including recent discussions involving Houston artist Travis “The Rax” Few and a George Floyd-themed mural in River Oaks.

Houston supporters and advocates have continued working to preserve Floyd’s memory through art, community events, and public tributes. Among those efforts was the donation of a $110,000 bronze George Floyd statue to Harris County by Danette Davis of Kay Davis and Associates. The sculpture, titled A Conversation with George, was created by sculptor Adrien Broomhead-Risdon.

Organizers say the Memorial Day celebration is intended to provide a positive and uplifting environment where residents can come together in remembrance while also celebrating community strength and unity.
