Former President Barack Obama made a stop in Austin on Tuesday, joining Texas state Reps. James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa for lunch and conversations focused on energizing young voters and expanding Democratic turnout ahead of the November election.
They gathered at Taco Joint near the University of Texas at Austin campus, where patrons were greeted by the unexpected appearance of the former president. Obama spent time greeting customers, taking photos, and speaking with students and community members about civic engagement.
The visit marked a notable show of national Democratic support for Talarico and Hinojosa, who are now leading the party’s statewide ticket in Texas this election cycle.
Hinojosa is set to face incumbent Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in November in the race for governor. Meanwhile, Talarico will compete in the U.S. Senate race against either John Cornyn or Ken Paxton, depending on the outcome of the Republican runoff election scheduled later this month.
Political observers say Obama’s appearance underscores growing national attention on Texas as Democrats continue efforts to increase voter participation, particularly among young people, first-time voters, and communities historically underrepresented at the polls.
With voter registration and turnout expected to play a critical role in the election outcome, Texans are being encouraged to verify their registration status or register to vote ahead of state deadlines. Eligible residents can register through their county voter registrar’s office, local election offices, public libraries, or designated voter registration drives. Texans must be registered at least 30 days before Election Day in order to cast a ballot in the November election.
