Acres Homes Juneteenth Parade Tradition Pauses, Organizers Announce Alternative Event

The Acres Homes Juneteenth Parade is a community celebration held in Houston’s historic Acres Homes neighborhood honoring Juneteenth, which marks June 19, 1865, the date enslaved people in Texas learned they were free. The parade is closely associated with the late Honorable Sylvester Turner, a native of Acres Homes who supported and helped elevate the annual event during his time in office. It serves as both a cultural celebration and a recognition of the neighborhood’s deep historical significance. The parade has traditionally featured marching bands, civic and church groups, youth organizations, dance teams, and decorated floats traveling through key corridors in Acres Homes, often beginning near the Acres Homes Multi-Service Center. The event has drawn community members from across Houston and has grown into a major annual Juneteenth tradition highlighting local pride and heritage.

In a statement regarding this year’s celebration, Ashley Turner Captain, daughter of the late Mayor Sylvester Turner, said: “The signature tradition of the “Annual Acres Home Juneteenth Parade”, which was created in 2008 by my father, the late Mayor/Congressman, Honorable Sylvester Turner, has become a beloved community tradition and celebration in the city of Houston and the Acres Homes community. We are honored that Houston is a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a celebration of global soccer, and is being hosted for the first time in over 30 years in the United States. I am even prouder that my father played an integral role in Houston becoming a host city. We recognize that several of the competitions and matches will fall during the Juneteenth holiday period and we are greatly aware of the range of much needed security that will be provided by all of the local law enforcement agencies to ensure safety. While the Juneteenth Planning Committee and I remain committed in celebrating this historical Juneteenth holiday this year, the celebration will not take place in the form of the Annual Acres Homes Juneteenth Parade because public safety remains our number one priority. As a viable alternative for a safe and secure 2026 celebration, we are partnering with longtime community partner Lone Star College-Houston North, Harris to host a Juneteenth Celebration at Lone Star College-Houston North's Victory location in the Acres Homes community. By doing this, we honor my father, celebrate the Juneteenth holiday and respect the constraints on our local law enforcement agencies. The Juneteenth celebration will be held on Saturday, June 20th at Lone Star College-Houston North Campus, 4141 Victory Dr. from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and will be free to the community; food, music, games and other fun activities will be a part of this year’s celebration. In addition, we would like to showcase the amazing talent that is often displayed each year during the Annual Acres Homes Juneteenth Parade. Therefore, we are inviting the community to
participate by signing up to perform at the celebration, especially those who have previously been a part of the annual parade. If you are interested in performing, please register here.  We are looking forward to next year when we will resume the Annual Acres Homes Juneteenth Parade on Saturday, June 19, 2027.”
