Houston’s Ensemble Theatre Presents the Poetic and Powerful ‘Choir Boy’

Houston’s Ensemble Theatre continues its Rooted in Destiny Season with a striking production of ‘Choir Boy’, a play that is as musical as it is moving. Written by Tarell Alvin McCraney, the playwright behind the work that inspired Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, and directed by Rachel Hemphill Dickson with musical direction by Melanie Bivens, Choir Boy explores the lives of young Black students at Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys as they navigate identity, sexuality, and the bonds that hold them together.

The play first shined on Broadway in 2019 and earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Play, captivating audiences with its unique blend of poetry, music, and heart. Choir Boy has been described as “a poem inside a play” by The Guardian, with music and imagery that guide audiences to lean in, feel deeply, and listen closely to the stories unfolding on stage.

Through its compelling narrative and beautiful songs, Choir Boy highlights universal struggles with identity, acceptance, and the courage to embrace difference—making it a story that resonates across race, gender, and background.

Performances feature Elia Adams, Brian Broome, Shaq Hester, Jakori Jackson, Samuel Jones, Corey Shields, Jordyn Wardsworth, and Kaleb Womack, bringing the play’s multifaceted characters to life with emotional depth and musical excellence.

Choir Boy opens Friday, March 20, 2026, and runs through Sunday, April 12, 2026. The Ensemble Theatre invites members of the press and media to attend the special media night on opening night, March 20, 2026.

Founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins, The Ensemble Theatre is the oldest and largest professional African American theatre in the Southwest and one of the nation’s few that owns and operates its own facility with an in-house production team. Over nearly five decades, the theatre has remained a cornerstone of Houston’s cultural landscape, producing main stage seasons that celebrate the African American experience and providing educational programs, workshops, and opportunities for young performers.
