The Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) received $30,000 in dedicated state funding secured by Representative Lauren Simmons during her first legislative session in the Texas Legislature. The funding supports the museum’s mission to preserve, present, and celebrate the cultural heritage and artistic contributions of African Americans in Houston and beyond.

The allocation places HMAAC alongside other African American museums across the country that receive dedicated annual support. It will help the museum expand exhibitions, educational programming, and cultural initiatives that engage thousands of visitors each year while strengthening its role as a hub for community connection, learning, and dialogue.
Representative Simmons, one of the newest members of the Texas Legislature and a rising voice in Houston politics, has focused her efforts on initiatives that strengthen cultural institutions, education, and community development across the state. Securing this funding for HMAAC is part of her broader commitment to deliver meaningful investments to the communities she represents, helping local organizations thrive and expand their impact.
The first-ever public presentation of the funding was made in early February by Council Member Edward Pollard, highlighting the importance of state support for Houston’s cultural institutions and marking a historic moment for HMAAC.
HMAAC continues to grow as one of Houston’s leading institutions dedicated to African American history and arts, offering exhibitions, cultural events, and educational programs that highlight the contributions of African Americans to the city. The state investment comes at a key moment as the museum expands programming and deepens engagement with the community.
