Harris County Residents Invited to Celebrate FIFA World Cup 26™ at Precinct 4 Opening Match Festival

As Houston prepares to welcome fans from around the globe for FIFA World Cup 26™, Harris County residents and visitors are invited to gather today at Burnett Bayland Community Center for a free Opening Match Festival hosted by Commissioner Lesley Briones.

The community celebration marks the start of the world's most-watched sporting event and offers local families an opportunity to experience the excitement of the World Cup close to home. Attendees can watch the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, cheer on their favorite teams, enjoy live music, participate in games and activities, and sample food from local vendors. Fans will also have the chance to meet Diesel the Fox, the beloved mascot of Houston Dynamo FC.

The festival highlights Houston's role as one of the host cities for FIFA World Cup 26™ and reflects the region's deep connection to the global game. Few places embody that connection more than Precinct 4, the most international area in Harris County. Residents speak more than 100 languages and represent cultures from around the world, making soccer a shared passion that transcends borders and brings communities together.

Soccer plays a significant role in community life across Precinct 4. The precinct maintains 96 soccer fields, supports eight leagues, and hosts more than 8,000 matches each year, creating opportunities for residents of all ages to participate in the sport. From youth leagues to recreational play, soccer serves as a powerful tool for building friendships, promoting healthy lifestyles, and strengthening community bonds.

Commissioner Briones said the festival is an opportunity to celebrate both the opening of the World Cup and the diversity that makes Precinct 4 unique. As Houston welcomes the world, the event showcases how local communities are embracing the tournament and creating spaces where neighbors can come together in celebration.

The festival takes place at Burnett Bayland Community Center, located at 6026 Chimney Rock Road, beginning at 1 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
