Gov. Abbott Directs Texas Rangers to Investigate Fatal ICE Shooting in Houston

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Rangers to conduct an independent investigation into the fatal shooting of Houston resident Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during an encounter with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Abbott announced the decision Wednesday, saying the Texas Rangers, the investigative division of the Texas Department of Public Safety, will conduct an independent review of the incident. The investigation comes one week after the July 8 shooting, which has drawn significant public attention and prompted calls from local officials and community members for additional oversight.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz had requested that the Texas Rangers investigate the shooting. In recent days, residents also addressed Houston City Council during public comment, calling for greater transparency and the release of additional information related to the incident.

In a statement following Abbott's announcement, Whitmire said the governor "made the right decision" by authorizing the Texas Rangers to investigate after receiving the request from city officials.

"The public deserves transparency and accountability whenever a person's life is taken by a law enforcement agency," Whitmire said. "At a time like this, we must set aside politics and partisanship and focus on the facts."

According to the governor's office, the Texas Rangers will conduct an independent investigation and present their findings to the appropriate prosecutorial authority upon completion.

The Harris County District Attorney's Office is also conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting. District Attorney Sean Teare has said federal agencies control key evidence in the case, limiting the county's access during its review.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the investigation or indicated when further information may become available.
