Houston Leaders Call for Independent Investigation After ICE Agent Fatally Shoots Man in East Houston

Houston leaders and civil rights advocates are calling for an independent and transparent investigation after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during an attempted arrest Tuesday morning in east Houston.

Houston City Council Member Alejandra Salinas called for a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the release of available video footage and investigative findings. Her office said it has contacted appropriate city departments to determine what additional information is available and whether any city personnel or resources were involved in the incident.

League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and other Houston leaders are also urging an independent review of the shooting. Christian Menefee called for a transparent investigation and the public release of information gathered during the process.

The shooting occurred during an ICE operation in the East End area of Houston. According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Salgado Araujo was a Mexican national who was in the United States unlawfully.

ICE officials said agents attempted a traffic stop around 6:50 a.m. in the 6800 block of Canal Street as part of a targeted enforcement operation. The agency said Salgado Araujo attempted to flee, rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, ignored multiple verbal commands, and used his vehicle in an attempt to strike an ICE agent.

According to ICE, the agent fired his weapon in self-defense. Salgado Araujo was struck during the shooting, and emergency medical personnel responded. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Family members, according to LULAC, said Salgado Araujo was on his way to pick up workers when the shooting occurred.

LULAC officials have questioned aspects of ICE’s account of the incident and said additional evidence should be reviewed. The organization said photographs and videos recorded by witnesses appeared to show little visible damage to Salgado Araujo’s vehicle, while noting that officials have not reviewed all available evidence.

The calls for an independent investigation come amid concerns from local leaders and community organizations about transparency, accountability, and the use of deadly force during immigration enforcement operations.

Officials have not released additional details about the ongoing investigation.
