As SER of Puerto Rico celebrated its 75th anniversary, the nonprofit organization announced a significant expansion of its capacity to deliver specialized medical and rehabilitation services, supported in large part by a $1 million donation from attorney and philanthropist Thomas J. Henry.
The contribution is part of Henry’s broader global philanthropic initiative focused on expanding access to specialized healthcare and strengthening communities worldwide. These efforts are coordinated through his philanthropic center in Corpus Christi, Texas, which manages strategic investments in medical, educational, and community-based organizations designed to create measurable, long-term impact.
SER officials said the funding represents a transformative investment in healthcare access for both children and adults across Puerto Rico. The donation will allow the organization to recruit and retain highly specialized physicians in key disciplines, including fetal and neonatal neurology, adult neurology, neuroimmunology, physical medicine and sports rehabilitation, and pediatric rheumatology—areas where advanced expertise can significantly affect patient outcomes.
The expanded capacity comes as demand for services continues to grow. Between November 2024 and October 2025, SER of Puerto Rico delivered 61,367 services, reflecting a 15.5 percent increase over the previous year. Medical evaluations rose to 5,599, a 26.8 percent increase, while therapeutic services reached 54,638, up 13.3 percent. The organization also admitted 562 new participants during that period, expanding access to care by 32.6 percent.
In addition to increased service volume, SER reported a 30 percent reduction in therapy wait times, enabling families to access care sooner, when early intervention can be most effective.
As the only pediatric rehabilitation center in Puerto Rico, SER also provides services to adults with acquired conditions. Organization leaders noted that recent growth has translated into measurable improvements in mobility, communication, and functional independence for participants across the island.
Founded in 1950, SER of Puerto Rico provides comprehensive medical, therapeutic, educational, and rehabilitation services for individuals with physical disabilities, neurodevelopmental conditions, and autism spectrum disorders. With centers in San Juan, Ponce, and Ceiba, along with an islandwide community outreach program, SER continues to advance its mission as it enters its next chapter, supported by expanded philanthropic investment and sustained demand for specialized care.
