Haygood Elementary Opens as Model Campus for Growing Lamar CISD

Haygood Elementary School has opened in Fulshear as the first campus built from a new prototype design for Lamar Consolidated Independent School District, one of the fastest-growing school districts in Texas.

Designed by Pfluger Architects and built by Drymalla Construction, the school is the first of three planned elementary campuses within the Cross Creek West master-planned community. The 110,000-square-foot facility includes 46 classrooms and a 4,200-square-foot library and is designed to serve up to 854 students. The project was funded through Lamar CISD’s voter-approved 2022 bond program.

Lamar CISD currently serves nearly 49,000 students across 57 campuses and is projected to grow to 70,000 students within the next decade. Haygood Elementary supports families in the rapidly expanding Fulshear area, where master-planned communities continue to attract young families seeking strong public schools and modern neighborhood amenities.

The campus was developed using a prototype model that establishes consistent learning community sizes, support spaces, and library placement while allowing flexibility to adapt to individual sites. District officials say the approach helps balance efficiency and cost control with design elements that respond to the surrounding community.

Haygood Elementary emphasizes safety, transparency, and interaction. Glass walls and enclosed courtyards create visual connections between learning spaces while maintaining secure boundaries. Natural daylight is maximized throughout the building, reducing the need for artificial lighting during school hours. Shading systems and window films were incorporated to improve energy efficiency and student comfort.

Durable, low-maintenance materials were selected to reduce long-term operating costs and environmental impact. The campus design also supports outdoor learning and movement through a series of interconnected courtyards that bring light and activity into the center of the school.

The school is named in honor of longtime Lamar CISD educators James Richard and Marinella Haygood. Their legacy is reflected throughout the campus, including the Hedgehogs mascot and playful graphics featured in learning areas and the library.

District leaders view Haygood Elementary as a model for future campuses as enrollment continues to grow. The school is intended to serve not only as an educational facility but also as a community anchor for families in west Fort Bend County, reinforcing the district’s broader strategy to plan for growth while maintaining consistent learning environments across its schools.
