Imagine a day where creativity races as fast as wind-powered cars, rockets soar from your own imagination, and bicycles become rolling works of art. On Feb. 28, 2026, children across Houston and Fort Bend will get that chance during National Engineers’ Day, celebrated at Children’s Museum Houston and the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center.

Sponsored by Chevron in Houston and FLUOR in Fort Bend, the event is part of National Engineers Week (Feb. 22–28)—a time to celebrate the minds that design, build, and innovate the world around us. But this isn’t about textbooks and tests. It’s hands-on, high-energy fun that turns science and engineering into an adventure.
Building, Racing, and Flying in Houston
At Children’s Museum Houston, kids can kickstart their day in Brown Auditorium with the Ameritex Race Car Build, designing cardboard cars that are fast, funky, and entirely their own. Every hour from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., small engineers become big creators.
Meanwhile, Kids’ Hall hosts Construction Engineering Challenges from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., including Sail Cars, which harness the wind to race across tracks, and Straw Rockets, giving young minds a hands-on lesson in aerodynamics.
And if art and motion are more your child’s style, the Alexander Design Studio offers Design Your Own Art Bike, a pedal-powered project where creativity meets engineering courtesy of the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art. Kids can decorate and personalize bikes, turning imagination into tangible, rolling masterpieces.
Throughout the day, additional activities include:
- Light Doodles: Glow-in-the-dark art experiments in the Chevron Maker Lab
- Motor Cars: Battery-powered car races in Chevron Maker Annex
- Roller Coaster Art: Twists, turns, and creative coaster designs in Kids’ Hall Activity Table
Fort Bend Sparks Creativity and Curiosity
At the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center, young thinkers can dive into Maker Lab – Scribble Bots, a hands-on experience combining engineering, physics, and creativity to produce unpredictable art machines. The activity runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the OcuSOFT Art Academy.
Other activities include:
- Roller Coaster Art in Kids’ Hall, blending thrills with creativity
- Super-Powered Spin Art in OcuSOFT Art Academy
- Construction Engineering Challenges, including Sail Cars and Straw Rockets, perfect for learning physics while having fun
A Day to Build, Discover, and Imagine
National Engineers’ Day is more than just a celebration—it’s an invitation to explore curiosity, experiment with ideas, and see the world through the eyes of an engineer. Whether your child is a future inventor, designer, or problem solver, Feb. 28 offers the perfect blueprint for a day of discovery.
From the thrill of racing to the joy of creating, Houston and Fort Bend kids won’t just learn about engineering—they’ll experience it.
Activities, events, and times are subject to change.
