The Power of Movement in Protecting Heart and Breast Health

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States for both women and men. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease accounts for approximately 1 in every 5 deaths nationwide, and regular physical activity plays a critical role in lowering blood pressure, improving cholesterol levels, and reducing the  risk of heart disease and stroke. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States. Research published by the National Institutes of Health indicates that breast cancer survivors face a higher long-term risk of cardiovascular disease compared to women without a breast cancer history, highlighting the importance of heart-healthy lifestyle habits during and after treatment. The American Heart Association recommends adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week, noting that consistent movement can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease while also improving mental health, energy levels, and overall quality of life.

Even moderate activities have been shown to improve cardiovascular function, reduce inflammation, and support emotional well-being, reinforcing that movement does not need to be intense to be impactful.
