A new theatrical production exploring history, faith, resilience and identity will take audiences on a journey across generations when The Many Lives of Her: The Black Woman’s Journey Throughout Time comes to the Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston on Sunday, September 27.

Presented by Coyan DS Entertainment and Who Is She Entertainment, the production will be staged twice at MATCH, with performances scheduled for 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. in Matchbox 2. The production has a runtime of approximately one hour and 45 minutes, including one intermission, and is recommended for audiences ages 13 and older. 

At the center of the story is one woman whose journey becomes a reflection of generations of Black women. Beginning as an African Queen, she travels through pivotal periods of history, including enslavement, the early 20th century, the Civil Rights Movement, the crack epidemic and modern-day womanhood.

Through storytelling, music, movement and theatrical transformation, the production explores the strength, sacrifices, faith, resilience, identity and healing carried across generations. MATCH describes the production as an invitation to reflect on shared history, celebrate perseverance and recognize the legacy passed from one generation to the next. 

The production is written and produced by Jai Les and Coyan Blythe, according to the official MATCH listing. It is presented by Coyan DS Entertainment and Who Is She Entertainment, whose stated mission for the production is to educate, inspire and empower audiences while honoring the resilience and contributions of Black women throughout history. 

For Blythe and the creative team, the production is designed to go beyond simply recounting historical events. The story uses the stage to connect generations, encouraging audiences to consider how the experiences of Black women throughout history continue to shape identity, families and communities today.

The Houston engagement will take place at MATCH, 3400 Main St., a Midtown arts venue dedicated to making it easier for artists and audiences to experience theater, dance, music, visual art and other forms of creative expression. MATCH operates four performance spaces and presents a wide range of programming from Houston’s creative community.
