Fall is bringing a packed lineup of free arts, entertainment, cultural celebrations and family activities to Discovery Green, giving Houstonians plenty of reasons to make the downtown park part of their seasonal plans.

Diwali Festival of Lights

 

This year’s fall programming introduces several new experiences, including Fantastic Animals from México: Alebrijes and Nahuales, Deep in the Heart: A Texas Music Series and Discovery Green’s inaugural Diwali – Festival of Lights.

The season’s signature art installation, Fantastic Animals from México: Alebrijes and Nahuales, will transform the park with eight 20-foot-tall sculptures inspired by Mexican magical realism and Mesoamerican folklore. On display September 15 through October 18, the colorful creatures include imaginative forms such as a winged armadillo and a lion-bull.

Created by Mexican artists, the sculptures represent animal guardian spirits from Mesoamerican folklore and celebrate Mexico’s artistic heritage while highlighting the cultural connections between Houston and its neighbor to the south.

Visitors can explore the art form through hands-on workshops led by Mexican papier-mâché artist and folk-art creator Irving Mondragón Laguna. Workshops include Papier-Mâché Masks on September 19 and Small Alebrijes on September 26.

México en el Corazón

 

On September 26, Discovery Green will host México en el Corazón, bringing more than 70 performers to the park for an evening celebrating traditional Mexican dance, ballet folklórico, regional costumes, Indigenous traditions and music. The event runs from 7 to 10 p.m. and will also include a special Flea by Night featuring Latin food and vendors.

Flea by Night returns September 19 and 26 and October 17 from 6 to 10 p.m., giving visitors opportunities to shop from local artists, makers, plant vendors, vintage sellers and small businesses.

Music takes center stage in October with the new Deep in the Heart: A Texas Music Series, a free five-week concert series running Thursdays from October 1 through October 29. The series showcases Texas musicians across Americana, country, Tejano, indie rock, blues, folk, roots and hip-hop.

The lineup includes Cure for Paranoia, the 2026 NPR Tiny Desk winner, along with Jumprope and DJ Bloom on October 1; EZ Band with Bombón on October 8; Chaparelle with Rodell Duff and DJ Vinyl Ranch on October 15; 30footFALL with Municipal Bats and DJ Mexican Blackbird on October 22; and David Michael Wyatt with DJ Big Reeks on October 29.

Movie nights return with Screen on the Green, presented by the Vivian L. Smith Foundation. Families can bring blankets, chairs and a picnic for outdoor screenings under the stars. Selena will screen September 19, followed by Beetlejuice Beetlejuice on October 16.

Discovery Green’s cultural calendar continues with its inaugural Diwali – Festival of Lights on November 14. Presented with Tx2 Dance Company, the celebration will feature Bollywood dance lessons, performances showcasing styles from across India, henna art, cultural shopping and Indian food from local vendors.

Día de los Muertos returns November 1 with a community ofrenda created by Houston artist Angel Quesada, a Catrín y Catrinas Parade and costume contest, traditional performances, live music, food, crafts and vendors. The evening concludes with La Musical Ofrenda, a tribute concert celebrating Houston musicians and legendary artists from across Texas.

Scream on the Green

Halloween gets its own celebration with Scream on the Green on October 30, featuring a costume contest, living sculptures, games, spooky music and photo opportunities.

Families can also enjoy recurring programming throughout the fall. Writing Workshops with Writers in the Schools take place September 12, October 10 and November 14, while Toddler Tuesdays return in October with story time, crafts and activities for young children and their caregivers.

Discovery Green’s free fitness programming continues through November 30 with Yoga en Español, Gentle Flow Yoga, Hip Hop Yoga, Tai Chi and Yoga Better. Weekly Recycling Saturdays also continue from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The fall calendar also features several major community and cultural events. The Southern Smoke Festival returns October 3 with more than 85 acclaimed chefs, beverage professionals and live musical performances. The ticketed event supports the Southern Smoke Foundation’s mission to provide emergency relief to food and beverage workers nationwide.

The Korean Festival takes place October 10 and 11, followed by the Nigerian Culture Festival on October 17 and the IGBO Festival on October 24. Families with Pride and Space City Fest will also take place October 24 and 25, respectively.

With art installations, concerts, movies, cultural festivals, wellness activities and family programming filling the calendar, Discovery Green’s fall season offers Houstonians plenty of ways to experience the city’s creativity and cultural richness.
