Harris County Commissioners Court has unanimously authorized County Attorney Abbie Kamin to file an amicus brief supporting Texas laws that restrict firearms in sensitive locations, including bars, stadiums, schools, and professional sporting events.

The action allows Kamin to represent Harris County in Ziegenfuss v. Martin, a case challenging the constitutionality of Texas firearms restrictions. The plaintiffs, including an out-of-state gun rights advocacy group, argue that the laws violate the Second and Fourteenth Amendments.

The case was previously decided in favor of the State by U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman of the Northern District of Texas, who was appointed by President Donald Trump. The Texas Attorney General's Office declined to defend the laws in the case.

The case is now pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Harris County's amicus brief will support the continued enforcement of firearms restrictions in locations where state law permits them.
