The Mississippi Board of Nursing has closed its investigation into an anonymous complaint filed against Christine Wonsley, the mother of 18-year-old Nolan Wells.

Wonsley shared the update Wednesday in a Facebook post, saying the professional misconduct case had been closed.

"Update: The professional misconduct case that was opened due to an anonymous complaint has been CLOSED by the MS Board of Nursing. Thank you to all of those who have constantly kept us in your prayers. This definitely has added more hurt to an already devastating time because I love my job and I love my patients. NOLAN'S CASE IS STILL ONGOING. Again the question is: WHAT HAPPENED TO NOLAN?"

Wells disappeared after a Fourth of July boat trip with friends to Horn Island. The friends said they left the island when their boat started to take on water, but Wells chose to stay behind with a girl he had met. Wells was found dead days later near the island.

Since Wells' death, Wonsley and her husband have continued to seek answers about the circumstances surrounding their son's death.

The complaint against Wonsley was first made public by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the Wells family. Crump said Wonsley had taken a leave of absence from her nursing job to grieve the loss of her son.

At the time the complaint was announced, Crump called it an attempt to intimidate a grieving mother. Crump said the anonymous complaint against Wonsley should never have been filed.

"It was frivolous, it was unfounded, and it was never about patient care. It was an attempt to distract a grieving mother and intimidate her into silence, filed by someone who would not put their name on it. That effort failed," Crump said in a statement. "Christine is not going to spend her energy on whoever did this. She is focused on getting her questions answered, the same questions she has had since the day she lost her son. Those questions did not go away when this complaint was filed, and they do not go away now that it has been closed. What Christine still does not have is the truth about her son. We intend to get it."

The closure of the nursing investigation does not affect the ongoing criminal investigation into Nolan Wells' death.

The results of the state autopsy are expected to be presented to a Jackson County grand jury along with investigators' findings. Those results have not been released publicly. An independent autopsy commissioned by the family was inconclusive.

Federal charges have also been filed against individuals accused of threatening witnesses connected to the Nolan Wells investigation.
