Houston’s MLK Unity Parade Returns January 19, 2026

Parade registration now open

The MLK Unity Parade will be back in full force on January 19, 2026, promising a vibrant celebration of community, culture, and the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Organized by the Black Heritage Society Inc., the parade is free and open to the public, offering an opportunity for families, organizations, and civic groups to participate and showcase their unique entries.

This year, the parade will honor the original spirit of the MLK Jr. Parade, as envisioned by the Society’s late founder. A historic audio recording from January 21, 1978, captures the founder reflecting on the parade and its dedication to Dr. King along a major Houston thoroughfare. Participants can complete registration online to join the event and select their entries.

The 2026 parade will feature notable Grand Marshals who have made significant contributions to the Houston community. Legendary Houston radio personality “MADD HATTA” will lead as Grand Marshal, recognized for his influential career in music and radio, as well as his philanthropic efforts. Co-Grand Marshals include Debora Nixon, RN, founder of Nixon Home Care Inc., who oversees three senior facilities and champions equality and compassionate care, and Freddie Jackson, a retired Houston firefighter with 33 years of service, who has received numerous awards for his dedication to the community.

Special guests for the event include Rev. Dr. Derek King, nephew of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Jeffrey Peck, great-grandson of W.E.B. Du Bois, adding historical significance to the parade.

The MLK Unity Parade is part of a weekend of celebrations, including the MLK Comedy Jam, City-Wide Fellowship, and Family Fun Festival, all designed to highlight Houston’s culture, advocate for social justice, and honor the legacy of civil rights leaders through music, dance, and art. Tickets and additional information about events will be available soon.
