Visit Lake Charles (VLC) has announced a new partnership with Wheel the World, a global organization focused on making travel more accessible and inclusive for people of all abilities. The collaboration aims to enhance accessibility across Southwest Louisiana’s tourism sector, from attractions and accommodations to restaurants and experiences.
The partnership follows several months of research and planning by Taylor Beard Stanley, vice president of sales at Visit Lake Charles, who worked closely with Wheel the World to bring the initiative to the region. Wheel the World conducted accessibility assessments for 20 local businesses, identifying opportunities to improve inclusion for visitors and residents alike. Participating businesses included 121 Artisan Bistro, Area 337, Candlewood Suites Lake Charles, Creole Nature Trail Adventure Point, Crying Eagle Lakefront, Darrell's Famous Poboys, Doubletree by Hilton Sulphur Lake Charles, Hampton Inn Lake Charles, Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center, Holiday Inn Express & Suites Lake Charles, Imperial Calcasieu Museum, Luna Bar & Grill (Downtown), Pasta Lab, Pat’s of Henderson, Port Wonder, Sam Houston Jones State Park, Seafood Palace, The Max, Tru by Hilton Lake Charles, and The Mulberry Hotel.
Each business assessed will receive a detailed accessibility report, access to staff training through Wheel the World’s Accessibility Academy, and an Accessibility Verified seal indicating that the location has been evaluated by accessibility professionals. These tools are designed to help local partners create more inclusive experiences for travelers with disabilities.
The initiative also includes a dedicated landing page on Wheel the World’s website, providing travelers with centralized access to verified accessibility information, participating listings, and planning resources. By increasing accessibility, Visit Lake Charles aims to attract more visitors to the region while supporting local businesses and fostering long-term economic growth.
This partnership marks a significant step in Southwest Louisiana’s efforts to become a more inclusive destination, providing practical resources and guidance for businesses to better serve all travelers.
