Fort Bend County Shines Light on Mental Health with Empowering “Let’s Break the Stigma” Awareness Event

In a profound and purposeful effort to normalize conversations around mental wellness, Fort Bend County hosted a moving and impactful “Let’s Break the Stigma” Mental Health Awareness Event on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. Held at the Historic Courthouse in Richmond, this powerful gathering brought together elected officials, healthcare professionals, advocates, and residents united by one mission: to end the stigma surrounding mental health.

Timed in observance of Mental Health Awareness Month, the event served as a rallying cry for compassion, education, and change—providing community members with direct access to wellness activities, mindfulness tools, and resources from local behavioral health providers.

A Historic Step Forward: County Task Force Established

During the day’s proceedings, Fort Bend County Judge KP George and the Commissioners Court took a bold and unprecedented step forward by officially proclaiming May as Mental Health Awareness Month and establishing the Fort Bend County Employee Mental Health and Behavioral Health Task Force. This new initiative—now in effect—demonstrates a strong commitment to nurturing mental wellness not only within the community but also internally among county staff, first responders, and public service employees.

“Today marks a powerful step forward in our commitment to mental health,” said Judge KP George. “Together, we’re breaking barriers, raising awareness, and creating pathways to care for every individual in our county.”

The resolution was widely applauded and underscored the power of unity across departments. Notable contributions came from Health and Human Services, the Sheriff’s Office, the County Attorney’s Office, Human Resources, Risk Management, the County Judge’s Office, and Behavioral Health Services, all of which played a crucial role in expanding access to mental health support in Fort Bend County.

Healing Through Connection and Education

The “Let’s Break the Stigma” event offered a welcoming environment where residents could engage in meaningful conversations about emotional resilience and mental health. Guests participated in wellness stations, experienced holistic self-care practices, and connected with behavioral health professionals offering real-world solutions to real-life struggles.

The community's response was heartfelt and enthusiastic, reflecting a growing recognition of mental health as a vital component of public health.
