The Ensemble Theatre Concludes 48th Season with Electrifying “The Tap Dance Kid” Musical Spectacular

HOUSTON, TX — The Ensemble Theatre is ending its remarkable 48th Artistic Season on a powerful, rhythmic note with the highly anticipated opening of The Tap Dance Kid, a Tony Award-winning musical that opens tomorrow. Bursting with energy, heart, and soul, the production brings a timeless story of self-expression, family dynamics, and the healing power of the arts to Houston’s vibrant theater scene.

Adapted from the novel Nobody’s Family is Going to Change by Louise Fitzhugh, The Tap Dance Kid features a dynamic book by Charles Blackwell, music by Henry Krieger (Dreamgirls), and lyrics by Robert Lorick. This compelling story follows a young African American child with big Broadway dreams, caught between the joy of artistic discovery and the pressure to follow a more “respectable” path laid out by a stern, traditional father determined to keep the family rooted in legal success.

Directed with insight and sensitivity by acclaimed director Kathryn Ervin, and featuring vibrant musical direction by Phillip Hall, the production’s heartbeat comes alive through exhilarating choreography by Monica Josette. Every tap, turn, and triumphant beat delivers a message of resilience, passion, and generational transformation.

“We’re closing this season with a celebration of Black artistic legacy and the beauty of personal freedom,” says Ensemble Theatre representatives. “This story is especially meaningful for young dreamers and those who have ever had to fight to express who they truly are.”

Adding to the excitement, Opening Night guests are encouraged to wear black and white in tribute to the tap dance greats who paved the way — including Bojangles Robinson, the Nicholas Brothers, and Sandman Sims — symbolizing a legacy of excellence and rhythm that pulses through the show.

Perfect for families, dance lovers, and anyone who values cultural richness in the arts, The Tap Dance Kid is more than a musical — it’s a movement of empowerment and joy.
