Houston Heat Puts Vulnerable Families at Risk — Here’s How to Get Free A/C Units Now

As summer temperatures soar across the region, Rebuilding Together Houston (RTH) is offering a critical service for those who need it most. The nonprofit is now providing free window air conditioning units to eligible low-income homeowners throughout Harris County, with the goal of keeping families safe during the extreme Texas heat.

These window units, which also function as heaters in the winter, are part of RTH’s larger mission to support resilient, healthy housing for the most vulnerable. Many residents across Houston live in aging homes without reliable temperature control. Left unaddressed, these conditions can lead to severe health risks, particularly for seniors, veterans, and young children.

With climate-related weather extremes becoming more common, access to efficient temperature regulation is no longer a luxury — it’s a necessity. Rebuilding Together Houston is working to close this gap for families living below the poverty line, where unsafe housing conditions can increase the risk of displacement, illness, and even death during high heat periods.

How the Program Works

Low-income homeowners are encouraged to contact Rebuilding Together Houston to determine their eligibility. Once approved, residents will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis to receive and install two window A/C units per household.

As the region’s trusted expert in home repair and disaster recovery, Rebuilding Together Houston estimates that more than 100,000 families in Houston and Harris County currently live in homes that need these essential services. Without proper cooling and heating, these families face serious threats to their health and safety every season.

The program is designed to help people stay safely in their homes — reducing the risk of homelessness, protecting against life-threatening temperatures, and supporting year-round resilience in the face of increasing climate extremes.

Families who qualify should act quickly to secure this free service before the peak of summer sets in.
