Aspiring actors and Shakespeare enthusiasts across the Greater Houston area are invited to step into the spotlight as Fort Bend County Libraries teams up with The Live Oak Playhouse for an exciting theatrical opportunity this summer. Open auditions for the beloved Shakespearean drama The Merchant of Venice will take place on Saturday and Sunday, July 12–13, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Bohachevsky Gallery inside the George Memorial Library, located at 1001 Golfview Drive in Richmond, Texas.

Presented as part of the library’s acclaimed “Shakespeare-by-the-Book” series, the production will bring the Bard’s timeless tale of justice, mercy, and human complexity to life at the Jodie E. Stavinoha Amphitheater on October 17, 18, 24, and 25. Directed and adapted by the talented Chepe Lockett, the performance promises a fresh and thought-provoking take on the classic.

What to Expect at Auditions

Actors aged 16 and older are welcome to audition. No appointments are necessary—this is a come-and-go format designed to make the process easy and inclusive. Participants will perform cold readings from the script, and while headshots and resumés are appreciated, they are not required. Scripts and sides will be provided, though familiarity with the play is highly recommended.

A stipend will be offered to selected cast members, making this a fantastic opportunity for both emerging and seasoned local talent to perform in a professional-caliber production while engaging with the community.
