SUGAR LAND, TX — As our population ages, the importance of brain health and dementia awareness has never been more urgent. In a proactive response, Fort Bend County Libraries, in collaboration with the Fort Bend County Health and Human Services Department, is launching a free, three-part public education series at the First Colony Branch Library focused on brain health, Alzheimer's, dementia, and the realities of aging.
Held on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m., beginning July 2, this enlightening and empowering series is designed to give individuals, caregivers, and families the tools they need to navigate aging with confidence, compassion, and clarity.
🧠 Session 1 – July 2
“Healthy Living for Your Brain & Body: Tips from the Latest Research”
Presented by Ryan Gant, a county nutritionist and community wellness advocate, this session explores research-based strategies for improving overall brain and body health. Attendees will gain actionable lifestyle tips on nutrition, movement, cognitive engagement, and mental well-being to promote healthy aging and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
🧩 Session 2 – July 9
“Understanding Alzheimer’s & Dementia”
Also led by Ryan Gant, this critical session delves into the key differences between Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. Participants will learn about early symptoms, stages of progression, risk factors, and how to identify signs that signal it’s time to seek medical support.
💬 Session 3 – July 16
“Dementia Conversations: Driving, Doctor Visits & Legal/Financial Planning”
Presented by Tilisa Lazingar, RN, a chronic disease nurse with over a decade of experience in elder care and preventive health, this final session offers practical advice for tackling tough conversations. From navigating doctor appointments to discussing driving safety and long-term planning, Lazingar will guide attendees through these often-emotional milestones with sensitivity and strategy.
