Amanda Edwards to Host ‘People Over Politics’ Town Hall on Key District Issues

Congressional candidate Amanda Edwards will host a public town hall this Saturday, August 2, focused on redistricting, disaster recovery, and infrastructure issues affecting Houston’s 18th Congressional District. The event, titled People Over Politics, will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church, with journalist Khambrel Marshall serving as moderator.

According to Edwards’ campaign, the town hall is intended to serve as a platform for local residents to raise concerns and engage in dialogue about policy decisions impacting their lives. The event will include a Q&A session and address several major topics, including:

  • Redistricting efforts and concerns over diminishing representation for Black and Brown communities in the district.
  • The “Big Beautiful Bill,” described by organizers as a legislative proposal that could lead to sweeping cuts, including $900 billion in Medicaid reductions and limited access to education.
  • Disaster recovery and community infrastructure needs, with attention on long-standing challenges and proposed solutions.

“As our Texas Legislature seeks to redistrict the 18th Congressional District, we must stand up for the 800,000 residents who are without their voice and vote at this time,” Edwards stated in the release. “This People Over Politics Town Hall will amplify the voices of the residents... and be a call to action.”

The event is part of Edwards’ broader campaign efforts to engage with constituents as the race for the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s seat intensifies.

According to a new University of Houston Hobby School of Public Affairs survey released today, Edwards and Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee are currently locked in a statistical tie, with a large share of voters still undecided.

The August 2 town hall is one of several campaign-related events taking place as candidates ramp up efforts to define their platforms ahead of the election.
