Houston City College Makes History: A Bold New Name for a Bold New Era

Local Focus. Global Reach. With that powerful tagline, Houston Community College has turned a new chapter in its storied legacy — officially adopting the new name: Houston City College. Approved by the board in a unanimous vote, this moment marks far more than a rebrand — it signals a future-focused evolution aligned with the needs of Houston’s growing, diverse, and tech-forward population.

Founded in 1971 to expand access to higher education across Houston’s urban core, Houston Community College grew into one of the most respected two-year institutions in the nation. But as the city transformed into a global metropolis — and as educational and workforce needs evolved — the institution knew it was time to rise again to meet the moment.

Enter Houston City College.

This isn’t just a name change; it’s a mission upgrade. The College is now offering four-year baccalaureate degrees — a game-changer for local students seeking affordability, flexibility, and excellence in higher education. Among the first offerings? Timely and transformative programs in Healthcare Management and Artificial Intelligence — two fields that promise not only local impact but global influence.

Dr. Margaret Ford Fisher, Chancellor of Houston City College, emphasized the deeper significance behind the change:

“Houston City College reflects the strength and spirit of our students, our neighborhoods, and our city. We’re rooted in community, but our vision is global.”

What does this mean for students?

More degree pathways, including four-year options that rival traditional universities

Modern programs aligned with 21st-century job markets

Continued affordability and accessibility for all Houstonians, regardless of ZIP code

A college name that proudly represents our city on the national and global stage

Houston Style Magazine has long championed education as a pathway to equity and empowerment. This historic change further underscores the institution’s commitment to creating opportunities for first-generation students, returning adults, and dreamers of all backgrounds.

As Houston continues to lead in energy, medicine, innovation, and culture, Houston City College now stands poised to lead in education — blazing new trails, breaking old boundaries, and building a better future for all.

Welcome to the new era. Welcome to Houston City College.
