BlackDoctor.org Ushers in a Bold New Era, Appoints Akinwole “Aki” Garrett as President & COO to Spearhead Growth and Innovation

In a powerful stride toward shaping the future of health and wellness for communities of color, BlackDoctor.org (BDO) — the nation’s premier health and wellness platform for Black families — has officially appointed Akinwole (Aki) Garrett, MBA as its new President and Chief Operating Officer (COO). Garrett, a proven media visionary with nearly 20 years of executive leadership experience, is set to guide BDO through an exciting new chapter of expansion, innovation, and cultural impact.

The announcement signals more than a leadership shift; it marks a renewed commitment to addressing health disparities and empowering Black communities with trustworthy, culturally relevant healthcare resources.

"This is more than just a new hire — it’s the beginning of a transformative era for BlackDoctor.org," said Reggie Ware, CEO and Founder of BDO. "Aki’s strategic mind, combined with his personal passion for health and deep connection to community empowerment, is exactly what BDO needs to reach new heights. Together, we’re poised to broaden our reach and ensure every Black family has the information and tools they need to live healthier, longer lives."

In his new role as President and COO, Garrett will focus on advancing BDO’s business strategies, optimizing daily operations, and expanding its influence across emerging platforms including premium video, influencer-led podcasting, lifestyle verticals, strategic partnerships, and e-commerce initiatives. He will also fine-tune the company’s core pillars — from editorial and live events to brand marketing — to meet the evolving needs of its loyal and ever-growing audience.

Garrett joins BDO at a pivotal moment, as the platform celebrates two decades of groundbreaking service to the Black community. With over 6.5 million monthly visitors and a staggering 20 million social media reach, BDO has become a digital sanctuary for health information, trusted advice, and access to culturally competent medical professionals.

"It’s a true honor to join BlackDoctor.org at this moment in its journey," said Garrett. "For 20 years, BDO has stood at the intersection of healthcare and culture, offering guidance, education, and empowerment to the community. I’m thrilled to be part of BDO 2.0 — a new phase where we build on this incredible legacy and innovate for the future."

Before stepping into this new role, Garrett earned accolades for his dynamic leadership at REVOLT Media & TV, the nation’s largest Black-owned multimedia company. There, as Vice President and Head of Business Development & Mergers & Acquisitions, he played a central role in launching new revenue streams, including the REVOLT Podcast Network, REVOLT Shop, 440 Artists music distribution, and the REVOLT Creator Network. His career also includes pivotal roles at SHE Media, where he facilitated its acquisition by Penske Media, as well as earlier leadership positions at CBS (now Paramount) and The Walt Disney Company.

Garrett’s professional achievements are matched by his personal passion. Having faced health challenges in his own family, he understands firsthand the importance of culturally attuned health information — making his new role at BDO deeply personal.

A proud scholar, Garrett holds a BSBA from Washington University in St. Louis and an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. He lives in North Carolina with his wife of ten years and their three children.

As BlackDoctor.org continues its mission to combat health disparities and uplift Black families, Garrett’s appointment represents not only an investment in strategic leadership but also a heartfelt pledge to community wellness.

For 20 years, BlackDoctor.org has stood as a beacon for health empowerment. Under Garrett’s guidance, its future looks brighter than ever.
