Stay Safe on the Road: TxDOT’s New Campaign on Trailer Hitch and Towing Safety Tips

Whether it’s towing a boat to the lake or operating a small business, millions of Texans rely on trailers for everyday activities. However, understanding how to safely attach and tow a trailer is critical to preventing dangerous accidents on the road. In light of this, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched a new safety initiative to help drivers hitch trailers properly and drive safely while towing.

The campaign highlights the tragic death of Kelly Hall, a wife and mother of three from Tyler, Texas, who lost her life on March 8, 2021, when an improperly secured food trailer detached from a truck and struck her vehicle. To prevent such heartbreaking incidents, TxDOT is spreading awareness of crucial safety measures for hitching and towing trailers.

TxDOT tips on how to safely hitch a trailer

To help keep everyone safe on the road, it’s important to know how to properly attach a trailer to a truck. TxDOT safety experts from the El Paso area show the step-by-step process on how to properly hitch a trailer.

TxDOT's Safety Tips for Trailer Hitching and Towing:

1. Choosing the Right Equipment:

- Always check your vehicle’s tow rating in the owner’s manual to ensure it can safely handle the weight of the fully loaded trailer.

- Make sure the hitch ball size matches the trailer coupler and load capacity. Mismatched components can result in the trailer detaching.

- Check tire pressure on both the tow vehicle and the trailer, including the spares. Increased pressure may be needed when towing, as recommended in your vehicle’s manual.

2. Safely Hitching a Trailer:

- Inspect all hitch components to ensure they are in good working condition.

- Have a friend or colleague help align the vehicle and trailer for accurate attachment.

- The ball mount’s rise or drop should be correct so the trailer rides parallel to the ground.

- Always use safety chains—it's the law. Crisscross them under the hitch for added security.

- Verify that trailer lights, running lights, and brake lights are working before you hit the road.

3. Driving Tips When Towing:

- Drive slowly and maintain extra stopping distance, as it takes longer to stop when towing.

- Watch for trailer sway—remove your foot from the gas and apply the trailer brakes gently if the trailer starts to sway.

- Be cautious when turning or changing lanes as trailers require more space.

Raising Awareness with "Be Safe. Drive Smart."

TxDOT’s "Be Safe. Drive Smart." campaign aims to raise statewide awareness about trailer safety and proper towing techniques. It is part of the broader #EndTheStreakTX initiative, a campaign dedicated to eliminating daily fatalities on Texas roads. Notably, November 7, 2000, marked the last day with no traffic-related deaths in Texas.

With over 80,000 miles of roads under its care, along with responsibilities in aviation, maritime, rail, and public transportation, TxDOT continues to play a critical role in keeping Texans connected and safe.
