A Documentary that Brings Untold Stories to Life

Earlier this month, the A&E documentary series The Chicano Squad premiered, recounting the inspiring journey of the five original members of Houston’s first all-Latino homicide team. Formed in 1979 in response to the surge of violent crimes affecting Houston’s Latino community, these officers were tasked with solving cases that were often ignored or mishandled. Despite receiving little formal training, they swiftly became one of the most decorated teams within the Houston Police Department (HPD).

The two-part documentary not only dives into the squad's numerous accomplishments but also captures the human stories behind the badge. Produced in part by the son of one of the original squad members, it provides a personal and poignant narrative about the officers who put their lives on the line for a community that desperately needed representation.

Cristela Alonzo: The Voice of the Community

The squad's story was further amplified in 2021 through a podcast series hosted by Texas-born comedian and actress Cristela Alonzo. Known for her sharp wit and dedication to uplifting Latino voices, Alonzo dove deep into the squad’s history, exploring how their mission reflected broader issues of justice and community relations.

In an interview with Houston Matters, Alonzo expressed her passion for storytelling: "Whether it's comedic or dramatic, if the story needs to be told, I want to tell it. Especially if it centers around my community. The story of The Chicano Squad could have been taken straight from today's headlines—it's a powerful reminder of how history continues to shape our present."

AARP’s Commitment to Highlighting Latino Heroes

AARP, known for its advocacy for the aging population, has extended its efforts to spotlight the stories of Hispanic and Latino trailblazers through events like the Astros' Hispanic Heritage Weekend and the documentary's local screenings in Houston and Austin.

Rosalinda Martinez, AARP Texas Director of Community Strategy, emphasized the importance of recognizing the squad’s service: “These men were pioneers—not just in law enforcement but in bridging a cultural divide that existed in our city. Their courage and commitment to justice have left a lasting legacy, one that continues to inspire generations.”

By supporting The Chicano Squad documentary screenings, AARP is ensuring that the story of these Latino heroes reaches a wider audience, amplifying the message that diversity and representation are vital components of community strength and progress.

As Houston continues to grow and evolve, events like this highlight the power of storytelling and the importance of honoring those who have paved the way for progress.
