In a strategic move that underscores its commitment to innovation and growth, General Motors (GM) has welcomed Alfred F. Kelly, Jr., former chairman and CEO of Visa Inc., to its board of directors. Kelly, widely recognized for his exceptional leadership and expertise in digital payments, brings decades of experience in technology, finance, and global business to GM as the company accelerates its journey toward an all-electric, tech-driven future.

Kelly’s appointment, effective as of September 2024, marks a significant addition to GM’s already dynamic board. Having served as Visa’s CEO from 2016 to 2023, and as executive chairman until his retirement in January 2024, Kelly was instrumental in driving Visa’s global expansion. Under his leadership, Visa became a powerhouse in digital payments, steering the company through a period of rapid technological transformation and cementing its place as a global leader in financial services.

“Al Kelly’s unparalleled financial acumen, combined with his insights into technology and consumer behavior, will be invaluable as GM expands its focus on electric vehicles (EVs), autonomous technology, and cutting-edge software solutions,” said Mary Barra, GM Chair and CEO. “His experience aligns perfectly with GM’s vision for a future that is electric, connected, and accessible to all.”

Kelly expressed his enthusiasm for joining the GM board during such a pivotal time. “This is an exciting era for GM as it harnesses technological advancements to revolutionize transportation and deliver new, innovative experiences to its customers,” Kelly stated. “I am eager to collaborate with GM’s leadership and contribute to achieving the company’s bold vision.”

Beyond his tenure at Visa, Kelly's resume includes leadership roles at American Express, where he served as president, and the New York-New Jersey Super Bowl Host Committee, where he was CEO. He is also deeply involved in philanthropy and education, serving as chair of the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation and holding board positions with Boston College, Iona University, and New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Kelly’s addition brings GM’s board to 13 members, reinforcing its diverse and experienced leadership team. With expertise spanning industries such as manufacturing, cybersecurity, digital commerce, and defense, GM’s board continues to reflect the company’s wide-reaching ambitions. Notably, six of the board members are women, highlighting GM’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in its leadership ranks.

As GM pioneers its all-electric future, powered by its state-of-the-art Ultium battery platform, the addition of a visionary like Kelly signals the company’s determination to not only lead in the EV market but also redefine the future of mobility through sustainable, innovative solutions.
