Texas Southern University Hosts 3rd Annual “We Roar Against Breast Cancer” Event

Texas Southern University (TSU) is set to host the 3rd annual “We Roar Against Breast Cancer” event, an initiative dedicated to health education and outreach in support of breast cancer awareness. This hybrid event, organized by the TSU Breast Cancer Screening and Prevention Center and the Center for Biomedical & Minority Health Research Community Engagement Core (CBMHR CEC), will take place on Friday, October 18, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Sawyer Plaza on the TSU campus.

The day will offer participants a chance to unite in the fight against breast cancer, with a range of activities aimed at empowerment, education, and community support. Attendees can expect to hear from inspiring speakers, participate in meaningful discussions, and connect with others dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness. Highlights of the day include a panel discussion featuring breast cancer survivors, an opportunity to honor those who have fought or continue to fight the disease, and access to on-site no-cost health services. Screenings, such as mammograms, biometric assessments, blood pressure and glucose checks, and immunizations, will be available, alongside a variety of health resources.

The event will feature notable attendees, including TSU President James W. Crawford III, Vice President of Research and Innovation Dr. Michelle Penn-Marshall, Senior Associate Vice President of Research and Innovation and CBMHR Principal Investigator Dr. Omonike Olaleye, and CBMHR CEC Director and TSU Breast Cancer Screening and Prevention Center Principal Investigator Dr. Veronica Ajewole-Mwema. Attendees will also hear from keynote speaker Dr. Polly Niravath, a breast oncologist from Houston Methodist. Adding to the event’s spirit, the TSU Ocean of Soul, TSU Debate Team, and TSU Sensations Dance Team will perform throughout the day.

The event will be held at Texas Southern University’s Sawyer Plaza, located at 3100 Cleburne, Houston, TX 77004.
