Calavera con Calavera Returns to Miller Outdoor Theatre for Day of the Dead Tradition

Grupo de Teatro Indigo will return to Miller Outdoor Theatre on November 1st at 7:30 pm, presenting the 11th season of their celebrated Day of the Dead production, Calavera con Calavera. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Grupo de Teatro Indigo, a local Latino-led theater group, will perform the all-Spanish play (with English subtitles) at Houston’s historic Miller Outdoor Theatre, made possible by a grant from the Miller Advisory Board.

Collaborating with FLAS (Fundación Latinoamericana Acción Social), a trusted Houston organization serving the community for over three decades, Grupo de Teatro Indigo continues its mission to bring vibrant cultural experiences to diverse audiences. Joining the stage for this year’s performance are Houston Ballet Folklorico, Conroe-based Danza Chicawa Dance, and singers Nancy Ilyria and Manuel Noe. Written by Eddie Gonzalez and directed by Sureya Mir, Calavera con Calavera is guided musically by Jose Vazquez, with the General Consulate of Mexico officially including the event as part of their Day of the Dead festivities.

Captivating audiences year after year, Calavera con Calavera has offered a powerful immersion into the vibrant imagery of Día De Muertos for a decade. Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner declared November 3rd as Calavera con Calavera Day in 2019, and in 2022, Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia celebrated the play as a cultural and educational asset for Harris County. Recognized internationally, Calavera con Calavera represented Houston in the World Wide Week of Day of the Dead events in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, with the General Consulate of Mexico in Houston fully supporting its authentic depiction of Mexican culture.
