Firefighters, history buffs, and families alike are gearing up for a blazing celebration as the Houston Fire Museum officially reopens its doors, following a $5.7 million renovation of its historic building at 2403 Milam St. The museum, housed in the former Station #7, will relight the flames of history on Saturday, October 12, 2024, offering a perfect mix of nostalgia and cutting-edge exhibits that honor Houston's brave firefighting legacy while preparing future generations for fire safety.
The grand reopening kicks off at 8 a.m. with a media preview, followed by a VIP reception for the city's leaders and sponsors. At 10:30 a.m., the doors swing open to the public for a day of hands-on learning, family-friendly activities, and special appearances that you won't want to miss. With free admission and plenty of interactive features, this is a Saturday worth circling on the calendar!
A Storied Landmark Revitalized
When it comes to history, the Houston Fire Museum holds more than just memories; it’s a testament to the evolution of firefighting in the Bayou City. Originally built in 1899, the museum's home, Station #7, is a relic from a time when fire trucks were horse-drawn and "bucket brigades" were state-of-the-art. Fast forward to today, after a multi-million-dollar facelift, and you’ll find a cutting-edge museum that bridges the gap between the past and the future of firefighting.
The renovations preserved the building's iconic red brick façade while completely modernizing the interiors, ensuring that the museum remains a cornerstone of the Midtown community for generations to come.
Fun for the Whole Family
Expect a full day of immersive activities designed to educate and entertain visitors of all ages. Sparky the Fire Dog will be on hand to greet guests, while kids can dive into a virtual firefighter exhibit or tour an inflatable fire safety house to practice escape routes. The museum’s newest interactive displays showcase state-of-the-art firefighting techniques, ensuring that visitors walk away with not just memories, but life-saving knowledge.
And don’t forget your camera! The fire trucks—some dating back to the 1900s—will make a perfect backdrop for some unforgettable photos. Plus, with a limited-time chance to meet real-life heroes and fire safety experts, you'll get to experience firsthand what it takes to keep Houston safe from the flames.
Scheduled to appear:
Kate Ryther, Executive Director of the Houston Fire Museum, who can discuss the vision behind the renovation and what the future holds for the museum.
Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz of the Houston Fire Department, sharing insights into the collaboration between the department and the museum.
Felicia Hutchins, Corporate Responsibility representative from State Farm, a sponsor of the museum’s community safety programs.
Jeremy Bolen, VP of Greater Houston Region for State Farm, available to discuss the importance of fire safety in Houston’s communities.
Tom McDonald, retired HFD firefighter and current President of the Houston Fire Museum Board of Trustees, will share tales from his storied career and the significance of preserving fire department history.
