The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) is celebrating its 50th anniversary in grand style, and with more than 67,000 alumni, there is plenty to be proud of! As part of the festivities, UHD is set to honor six distinguished alums at the 50th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, October 12, at the Hilton Americas-Houston. These exceptional individuals have not only left their mark on their respective industries but have also contributed to the community in transformative ways.
With awards in categories ranging from entrepreneurial achievements to community leadership, this year’s honorees exemplify what it means to turn a UHD degree into a platform for innovation, empowerment, and lasting change.
The Rising Star: Alum On The Rise Award
This year’s *Alum On The Rise Award* recognizes Dr. Aubrey McKenzie Jones (’14, Psychology), a force of nature in the fields of education and workforce development. Dr. Jones earned her MS and Ph.D. in Human Sciences, all while passionately advocating for students and individuals with disabilities. Collaborating with the Texas Workforce Commission, she has been instrumental in developing inclusive training programs that support personal independence and well-being.
But that’s not all—Dr. Jones has also channeled her expertise into founding a nonprofit focused on early childhood development, prenatal education, and family wellness. Her work reaches rural communities, where she helps students gain access to essential services for growth and success. A true advocate for inclusion, Dr. Jones is reshaping what it means to empower through education.
Past winners of this award include Maria del Pilar Montes (MBA, '17) and Christa Arefieva, M.D. (BS, '15), whose careers have also blazed brightly across Houston’s professional and philanthropic landscapes.
Building Dreams: Alum Entrepreneur Award
In the world of business, there are dreamers—and then there are doers. This year’s *Alum Entrepreneur Award* recipient, Krisshundria James (’14, Communications Studies), stands proudly in the latter category. As CEO and Founder of *Blossom Up, LLC*, James has devoted her career to empowering teen girls, young women, and women to overcome life’s challenges and achieve their dreams.
A transformational speaker with over 18 years of experience, James has touched lives in churches, colleges, women’s empowerment events, and beyond. She’s not just a leader—she’s also a two-time best-selling author, proving that her influence knows no bounds. Through her organization, she continues to uplift and inspire future generations of women, making her a beacon of hope and empowerment in the community.
Past recipients include Marcus Bowers (BAAS, '11), known for his dynamic business ventures, and Gabriela Smith (MBA, '18), another entrepreneur making waves in her field.
Masters of Their Craft: Distinguished Alumnus Award
This year, three UHD alums will receive the coveted *Distinguished Alumnus Award*, each having demonstrated remarkable commitment to both their careers and communities.
Chinaecherem Eze Coleman (’21, Data Science) is nothing short of extraordinary. At just 22 years old, she’s already making headlines as a leader in technology and an advocate for mental health and entrepreneurship. Coleman founded *Shaweh Hour*, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering young adults to become community leaders while maintaining mental wellness. She’s also made a global impact, reaching over 1,000 young adults across different cultures through her nonprofit and event planning business. Who says you can’t change the world before 25?
Then there's Roy L. Jackson Sr. (’22, BAAS), a world-class jazz saxophonist who has lent his musical talents to collaborations with legends like Conrad Johnson and Kyle Turner. Jackson’s soulful saxophone has graced the stages of jazz clubs and churches alike, with his unique blend of jazz, soul, funk, and gospel taking listeners on an emotional journey. His latest single, "Time Change," featuring Berklee’s David Caceres, continues to captivate audiences and jazz enthusiasts alike.
Last but certainly not least is Laura Dupree (’14, BS Interdisciplinary), an educator par excellence. Currently serving as Coordinator and Professor of the Associate of Arts in Teaching Program at Lone Star College-Tomball, Dupree has garnered an impressive list of accolades, including Faculty Excellence Awards and a commitment to student success that is second to none.
