As the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) celebrates half a century of service through the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, the agency is launching a festive awareness campaign to ensure no family is left behind this holiday season. From nutritious food to life-changing resources, Texas WIC continues to stand as a beacon of hope for families in need.
Celebrating Five Decades of Impact
Since its inception in March 1974, Texas WIC has transformed lives, serving more than 21 million individuals statewide. Today, the program reaches over 800,000 women, infants, and children every month. By offering free healthy foods, breastfeeding support, and nutrition education, WIC lays a foundation for healthier pregnancies, thriving infants, and stronger families.
"This milestone isn’t just a celebration of years but of the countless families who have found support, community, and empowerment through WIC," said Amanda Hovis, Nutrition Education and Clinic Services Director. "Our mission remains steadfast—making nutritious meals and valuable resources accessible to all eligible Texans."
Holiday Help for Families
The holiday season, while joyous, often brings financial challenges. Texas WIC recognizes these struggles and steps in to alleviate some of the burden. With this year’s campaign, the program invites eligible families—pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and caregivers of children under five—to apply for benefits now, ensuring they start 2025 with critical support in place.
"During the holidays, families gather at the table, and we want to make sure every table is filled with healthy options," added Hovis. "Texas WIC empowers families to focus on what matters most: creating cherished memories without the stress of food insecurity."
Who Can Apply?
WIC welcomes a variety of caregivers, not just mothers. Dads, grandparents, foster parents, and guardians are encouraged to apply if they care for children under five. Eligibility is determined by household income and size, and the application process is simple. WIC’s recent income guideline updates have made the program accessible to even more Texas families.
Why WIC Matters
Participation in WIC during pregnancy has been linked to healthier births, including lower risks of low birth weight and preterm delivery. Families enrolled in the program receive benefits such as:
*Access to fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, cheese, and other nutritious staples.
*Free breastfeeding support and one-on-one counseling.
*Nutrition education tailored to individual needs.
These resources ensure families can focus on other essentials, knowing their nutritional needs are met.
