Kick off the Holiday Season with the 34th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Wortham Theater Center

The holidays are here, and what better way to begin the festive season than with a dazzling celebration in the heart of Houston’s Theater District? The 34th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony at the Wortham Theater Center promises to bring joy, sparkle, and festive cheer for all ages. Whether you’re a seasoned Houstonian or a first-time visitor, this free event is sure to light up your holiday season!

A Tradition of Magic and Wonder

On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Wortham Theater Center will come alive with the iconic lighting of a nearly 30-foot Christmas tree. The stunning tree will be illuminated by none other than the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker, waving her magical wand to unveil the brilliant spectacle. With over 19,000 dazzling lights, this tree is destined to become the heart of your holiday memories.

But that’s not all—this year’s celebration features a giant Gingerbread House, a sweet attraction that’s sure to captivate and delight children (and adults) alike. The house will tempt attendees to admire its irresistible decorations while taking in the delicious aroma of festive treats.

Entertainment to Inspire the Holiday Spirit

No holiday event would be complete without music—and this one will not disappoint. The Brooke Wyatt Trio, presented by DACAMERA, will fill the air with festive melodies. To complement the atmosphere, a quartet from the Mercury Chamber Orchestra will also perform, creating a magical auditory experience that sets the tone for the season.

For those young at heart (and those young in age), the event offers hands-on holiday arts and crafts, courtesy of the Houston Ballet and DACAMERA. It’s a perfect opportunity to create something festive to take home, while enjoying cookies and refreshments generously provided throughout the celebration.

And of course, Santa Claus himself will be making a special appearance! Whether you’ve been naughty or nice, he’s ready to take complimentary photos with guests of all ages. Be sure to catch your favorite moments as you make memories with the big guy in the red suit.

Sugar Plum Plaza: A Picture-Perfect Experience

The magic continues just outside the Wortham, in Sugar Plum Plaza—an enchanting space where the holiday spirit comes to life. Take a photo inside Santa’s beautifully crafted sleigh or interact with the giant gift boxes scattered throughout the plaza. These larger-than-life decorations create the perfect backdrop for memorable family photos.

Sugar Plum Plaza is part of the City Lights Downtown Holiday Magic presented by Shell Energy, one of 12 festive villages across downtown Houston. Visitors can enjoy the magic of the season and explore all the sights and sounds of the holiday villages, open to the public and mostly free throughout the holiday season.

A Day Full of Festivities and Fun

As you wander through the festivities, don’t miss the opportunity to snap some fun photos—every year, there’s at least one child (or adult!) who can’t resist sneaking a piece of the beautiful Gingerbread House. It’s just one of the many charming moments you’ll experience at this must-attend holiday event.
