In a grand tribute to 120 years of transforming lives and building bridges across the city, the Houston Public Library Foundation held a celebratory luncheon on Thursday, October 31, 2024, at the historic Julia Ideson Building. The event brought together civic leaders, community advocates, and library supporters for a powerful moment of reflection, gratitude, and excitement for the future. This landmark anniversary event, co-chaired by the dynamic Mimi Brown and Michele Leal Farah, was a testament to the library’s unyielding commitment to serving Houston’s diverse communities.

The atmosphere was electrifying as Crystal Ayala, Telemundo Houston anchor and the event’s emcee, welcomed the attendees with warmth and excitement. The crowd was captivated by keynote speaker Dr. Cristina Rivera Garza, whose inspiring words painted a vivid picture of the role of libraries in shaping equitable and inclusive communities. Special guest Honorable John Whitmire, Houston’s newly appointed Mayor, underscored the city’s commitment to sustaining and expanding this vital institution’s resources, making it clear that the Houston Public Library is here to stay and thrive.

One of the afternoon’s highlights was the dedication of the Dr. James and Betty Key Map Room, an inspiring new space honoring Dr. James Key and Mrs. Betty Key, whose passion for cartography has enriched the lives of many Houstonians. This unique room, showcasing a curated collection of maps from across the globe, invites visitors to explore the world through geography and history. The creation of this special space was made possible through the unwavering commitment of Dr. James Key, Mrs. Betty Key, and Houston Public Library Director Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson, who served from 2005 to 2024, along with the steadfast support of City Council Member David Robinson, who served from 2020 to 2024. Their combined efforts have ensured that the library continues to inspire curiosity and learning for all ages.

Since its inception in 1904 as the Houston Lyceum and Carnegie Library, the Houston Public Library has grown from a single room with a collection of borrowed books to a sprawling system of locations, each a hub of learning, inspiration, and connectivity. Initially serving only 10,000 cardholders, the library now welcomes millions annually, continuously adapting to meet the evolving needs of Houston’s tech-savvy and culturally rich population. The central library, adorned with Spanish Renaissance architecture, remains a cherished landmark and a symbol of the library’s deep-rooted history in the heart of Houston.

The luncheon spotlighted the unveiling of the limited-edition MYLink Library Card, a stylish collectible designed to celebrate the library’s monumental journey. By securing a commemorative card, Houstonians are joining hands with the Houston Public Library Foundation to bridge the technology gap, boost literacy, and ensure the legacy of lifelong learning for generations to come.

A pressing message resonated throughout the event: while library usage has soared, funding remains disproportionately low. Houston ranks seventh nationwide in per capita library expenditures—a far cry from the stature of the nation’s fourth-largest city. The Foundation's dedicated team champions the need for better resources, aiming to align Houston's library services with its growing demands. For Houston, the library is more than just a repository of books; it’s a gathering space where community bonds are formed, ideas are exchanged, and paths to success are paved.
