Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Backs HISD Bond, Citing Urgent Need for School Improvements

With Election Day tomorrow, one of the most discussed local issues on the ballot is the Houston Independent School District (HISD) bond. The Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has issued a statement in support of the bond, emphasizing its importance for the region's economic future and educational quality. In the Chamber's words:

“The Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and its Board of Directors believes that a strong Houston ISD is critical to a robust regional economy. As Houston’s Independent School District, our businesses depend on HISD to educate, care for, and prepare students of all backgrounds for the workforce of tomorrow.

With Election Day just hours away, the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is proud to share its support of the HISD bond. The reason is simple: the district hasn’t put forward a bond in over a decade. As a result, Houston’s students are forced to learn in environments that are not just in disrepair – in some cases, they are a risk to the wellbeing of everyone in the building. As Houstonians, we cannot accept this as our reality.

Our regional economy relies on a strong public school system to support its future growth. Our business community is clamoring for a modern school system that serves the needs of the region’s current and future workforce. HISD parents want – and should be able to expect – that their students arrive to a safe, welcoming physical environment designed to facilitate learning every morning. And, most importantly, our kids deserve better.

We encourage voters to support the HISD bond as they head to the voting booth on Tuesday.”
