On April 20, 2024, the Houston Community College (HCC) Foundation hosted its annual gala, themed “Where Dreams Take Flight,” at the Hilton Americas-Houston. This prestigious event not only raised significant funds for student support but also honored Dr. Ruth J. Simmons, a trailblazer in the realm of higher education, for her profound impact on academia and student empowerment.
Dr. Ruth J. Simmons, who has held presidencies at Prairie View A&M University, Smith College, and Brown University—where she made history as the first African-American president of an Ivy League institution—was awarded the Crystal Eagle Honoree Award. Known for her visionary leadership and being named “Best College President” by Time magazine, Dr. Simmons has recently added author to her accomplishments with the publication of her memoir, *Up Home: One Girl’s Journey*.

On April 20, 2024, the Houston Community College (HCC) Foundation hosted its annual gala, themed “Where Dreams Take Flight,” at the Hilton Americas-Houston. This prestigious event not only raised significant funds for student support but also honored Dr. Ruth J. Simmons, a trailblazer in the realm of higher education, for her profound impact on academia and student empowerment.
The gala provided a stage for an enlightening conversation between HCC Chancellor Margaret Ford Fisher, Ed.D., and Dr. Simmons, which highlighted the profound narratives of leadership and educational advocacy that define Dr. Simmons’s career. In a touching tribute to her lifelong commitment to education, the HCC Foundation Board announced the creation of the Dr. Ruth J. Simmons Endowed Scholarship Fund with an initial endowment of $25,000.
Karen L. Schmidt, president of the Houston Community College Foundation, expressed her gratitude to the attendees and contributors: “The funds raised tonight, surpassing $650,000, will directly enhance our students’ educational journeys, helping them overcome financial barriers and achieve their dreams. Celebrating Dr. Simmons’s extraordinary legacy tonight inspires us all to continue supporting our students’ aspirations.”
The gala’s success underscores the community’s commitment to fostering educational opportunities and supporting the next generation of leaders. The funds raised will target the most pressing needs of HCC students, helping them to manage the complexities of work, family, and education.
