Naomi Ruth Barber King, beloved matriarch of the King family and revered civil rights activist, peacefully passed away on March 7th, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia, at the age of 92.

Mrs. King's journey of advocacy and service began in 1950 when she married Rev. Alfred Daniel (A.D.) Williams King, a Baptist minister and the younger brother of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Together, they stood alongside Dr. King during pivotal moments in the civil rights movement, offering steadfast support and solidarity. From the creation of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) to the marches in Selma, Mrs. King's presence was a testament to her unwavering commitment to justice and equality.

Following A.D.'s untimely passing in 1969, Mrs. King continued their legacy by establishing the A.D. King Foundation, a beacon of hope dedicated to empowering youth and women and advancing nonviolent social change. Through her foundation, she touched countless lives and inspired future generations to continue the fight for justice.

Mrs. King's impact extended far beyond her activism; she was also cherished as a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her grace, strength, and quiet dignity left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Known affectionately as the "Butterfly Queen," Mrs. King's resilience and faith in the face of adversity were beautifully captured in the 2022 documentary, "The Butterfly Queen: From Tragedy to Peace." Her unwavering devotion to her faith, exemplified by her favorite scripture verse, Psalm 118:24, and her steadfast belief in Jesus as her anchor, served as a source of inspiration to many.
