On July 27, 2024, the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) will transform into a bustling hub of digital creativity as it hosts the 11th annual SAAM Arcade. This year's event, running from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., invites visitors to embark on a journey through the theme "Adventure Awaits," celebrating video games that explore travel, adventure, and the thrill of discovering new worlds.
A Showcase of Innovation and Creativity
SAAM Arcade 2024 highlights the museum's dedication to recognizing video games as a significant part of our national visual culture. The event promises a day filled with interactive experiences, featuring a diverse array of games that push the boundaries of storytelling and artistic expression.
Independent Developer Showcase
The heart of the event is the "Indie Showcase," spotlighting nine innovative games from independent developers. These titles offer unique narratives and artistic styles, each embracing the theme of travel and adventure:

A Highland Song by inkle Set in the Scottish Highlands, players test their survival skills.

Inclusive and Accessible Experiences
SAAM Arcade is committed to providing an inclusive experience for all attendees. From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the event will offer a sensory-friendly environment with reduced sound levels. Noise-cancelling headphones will be available, and American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters will be on hand to ensure Deaf visitors can fully engage with the event.
Live Performances and Interactive Activities
Attendees can enjoy live musical performances by the Triforce Quartet at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., adding a vibrant auditory dimension to the day's festivities. For those seeking an extra layer of engagement, a themed scavenger hunt will guide visitors through the museum's galleries, linking video game themes to the museum's extensive collection.
The Side Quest Challenge
In addition to exploring games and exhibits, visitors can participate in the Side Quest challenge. This activity encourages attendees to interact with game developers, ask insightful questions, and earn exciting prizes.
