The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD), the second-largest university in Houston, continues to set itself apart by offering personalized support and transformative educational experiences to its students. This summer, UHD is proudly hosting the “Get Ready Gators” Summer Bridge Program, a testament to its commitment to providing accessible, high-quality education to first-time college students.
The “Get Ready Gators” Summer Bridge Program is a no-cost, five-week intensive academic preparation course designed to enhance the academic skills and social integration of incoming freshmen. The program aims to ease the transition from high school to university life, offering participants an engaging and rewarding collegiate experience. By focusing on academic and personal growth, UHD ensures that these students are well-prepared for the challenges of higher education.
This year, nineteen recent high school graduates are participating in the program, which runs Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. These students, who have maintained a minimum GPA of 2.5, hail from KIPP Academy, Harmony Public Schools, and various school districts across Houston, Katy, and Fort Bend. Remarkably, one dedicated student even relocated from Dallas to join UHD’s prestigious program.
Throughout the program, participants will earn nine college credits while engaging in small group sessions with faculty. They receive comprehensive academic support and mentoring, along with specialized peer assistance in Math and English, ensuring that every student has the tools they need to succeed.
UHD’s “Get Ready Gators” Summer Bridge Program is more than just an academic initiative; it’s a gateway to opportunity, fostering a sense of community and belonging among new students. By providing this robust support system, UHD is shaping future leaders who are ready to tackle the challenges of higher education and beyond.
