In the wake of Hurricane Beryl, the Institute for Spirituality and Health, in collaboration with the Greater Houston Healing Collaborative (GHHC), is hosting a crucial virtual event aimed at helping the community recover from the mental and emotional stresses caused by the storm. The event, titled “Breathing After Beryl: A Community Care Gathering,” will take place on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.
Aproteem Choudhury, director of the Institute’s Greater Houston Healing Collaborative, emphasizes the importance of community support in times of crisis. “In times of crisis, the strength of our community connection becomes more evident and essential. The mind-body medicine skills we share provide evidence-based tools to help individuals manage stress, heal from trauma, and foster resilience. These empower personal well-being and strengthen the fabric of our community, creating a supportive environment where everyone can thrive,” Choudhury said.
Joining Choudhury in leading this initiative is Leah Adams Pruitt, vice president of engagement at the Institute for Spirituality and Health. Both Choudhury and Adams Pruitt are available for interviews to discuss the coordinated response efforts, resources being mobilized, and the pivotal role of community collaboration in the recovery process.
Breathing After Beryl: A Community Care Gathering
This free online event invites everyone in the greater Houston area to come together and reflect on the hurricane's impacts. Participants will practice Mind-Body Skills to help connect, decompress, and discuss future opportunities for self-care and community support.
The Greater Houston Healing Collaborative, the cornerstone program of the Institute’s Center for Body, Spirit, and Mind, was established in response to the mental health needs that arose following Hurricane Harvey. Since its inception, the Collaborative has been a beacon of hope and healing, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, by providing support groups for medical professionals and first responders. To date, the Institute has trained over 120 facilitators who have impacted more than 30,000 individuals across Houston.
