The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) is reminding individuals impacted by the severe weather events in April and May to submit their Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) applications by the fast-approaching deadline of July 16, 2024. The Presidential Disaster Declaration covers numerous counties, including Harris, Dallas, Austin, and Montgomery, among others.
Who is Eligible for DUA?
Workers and self-employed individuals in the designated counties who are unable to work due to damage caused by the severe weather events may be eligible for DUA benefits. This assistance is designed for those who:
- Have exhausted all regular unemployment benefits or do not qualify for them.
- Were working, self-employed, or about to begin work or self-employment in the disaster area.
- Can no longer work due to physical damage or destruction of the workplace caused by the disaster.
- Relied on the affected work or self-employment as their primary income source.
- Cannot work due to an injury caused by the disaster.
- Became the primary household supporter because of the disaster-related death of the head of the household.
- Are unable to reach their workplace because travel routes are affected by the disaster.
Application Process
To apply for DUA, individuals can use the Unemployment Benefit Services online platform or call TWC at (800) 939-6631, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Applicants must specify that their claim is related to the severe weather damage. All necessary documentation must be submitted within 21 days from the application date.
Required Documentation
Applicants must provide:
- Social Security number.
- Proof of employment or self-employment at the time of the disaster, or evidence of an upcoming work start date that was disrupted by the disaster.
Failure to submit proof of employment within the 21-day window will result in halted payments and potential repayment of received benefits. The fastest way to submit proof is through TWC’s online UI Submission Portal. If online submission is not possible, documents can be sent via fax or mail to:
