Performing Arts Houston presents the return of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (the Trocks) as part of their 50th anniversary tour, on January 23, 2024, at Jones Hall. The all-male ballet company founded in 1974 will perform parodies of classical ballets Swan Lake and Paquita, as well as Yes Virginia, Another Piano Ballet, all performed en pointe. Tickets for the Trocks’ one-night-only performance start at $29, at performingartshouston.org.
The Trocks worked closely with Performing Arts Houston’s Education and Community Engagement department to develop a series of classes and workshops for Houston-area dance fans.
• On January 22 at 10 am, Trocks’ Ballet Master Raffaela Mora will lead a master class at Institute of Contemporary Dance for pre-professional and professional dancers ages 16 and up. Registration for the class is $20 and is open now at icdhouston.com.
• Mora will teach a movement workshop to the residents of Law Harrington Senior Living Center on January 22. The class is centers around “The Dying Swan” variation from Swan Lake, and offers participants a crash course in dance history, ballet technique, and an opportunity to express themselves through performance.
• Mora will lead a private pointe class for the male company members of the Houston Ballet, specifically geared towards those who will perform en pointe as the Stepsisters and Stepmother in Houston Ballet’s production of Cinderella this spring.
• On January 22 at 7 pm, Performing Arts Houston and Houston Cinema Arts will present a free screening of the Trocks’ PBS documentary Ballerina Boys at Discovery Green, followed by a Q&A with company members.
Founded in New York City in 1974, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, affectionately known as the Trocks, has grown from its roots in late-late shows in off-off Broadway lofts to a global touring sensation, performing from Tokyo to Toronto and everywhere in between. The company toes the line between drag and ballet with razor-sharp wit and breathtaking pointe work, performing polished parodies of works that span the classical ballet canon. Revered by ballet aficionados as well as by those who don’t know a plié from a jeté, the Trocks are “a guaranteed hoot for people who know nothing of ballet and an absolute must for those who think they know the originals.” (Sydney Star Observer).
