Holocaust Museum Houston to Showcase “Life and Death on the Border 1910-1920” Exhibition

A groundbreaking exhibition, Life and Death on the Border 1910-1920, will be on display at Holocaust Museum Houston’s Josef and Edith Mincberg Gallery from January 24, 2025, through May 25, 2025. The exhibition delves into a challenging period in history, marked by the Mexican Revolution and World War I, and its profound impact on the Texas-Mexico border.

Presented in both Spanish and English, Life and Death on the Border 1910-1920 explores the struggles and racial violence endured by people of Mexican descent in the early 20th century. Through photographs, newspaper articles, and firsthand accounts, the exhibition brings to life the social upheaval faced by Tejano families, many of whom were long-established inhabitants and landowners. The expansion of railroads and changing demographics intensified prejudice and racial tensions, disrupting lives and communities.

This conflict in Texas became a catalyst for the Mexican American civil rights movement, including the formation of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the Chicano movement of the 1970s. It also inspired a cultural renaissance along the border and beyond, the effects of which are still felt today.

Life and Death on the Border 1910-1920 was originally produced by the Bullock Texas State History Museum in collaboration with Refusing to Forget, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about this pivotal chapter in history.
