Houston proudly claims Lt. Daniel Galvan, a shining example of dedication and resilience, who currently serves aboard the USS Barry, a U.S. Navy destroyer stationed at Naval Station Everett in the Pacific Northwest. As the ship undergoes routine maintenance at a Seattle shipyard, Lt. Galvan’s journey from Houston to the high seas is a testament to the values instilled in him by his upbringing and education.

A Cypress Ridge High School graduate of the class of 2011, Galvan furthered his education with a degree in construction management from Texas Tech University in 2017. His time in Houston, characterized by its rich tapestry of cultures and communities, profoundly shaped his approach to leadership in the Navy.

“The diversity of Houston taught me invaluable lessons,” Galvan reflects. “Growing up in such a varied environment, I learned to engage with people from all walks of life. This experience helps me connect with sailors who have different interests and backgrounds, fostering a more inclusive atmosphere on board.”

Galvan’s drive is also deeply rooted in his family values. “My parents instilled a strong work ethic in me and encouraged me to aim higher,” he shares. “I was inspired by stories like the one in the Houston Chronicle about Hispanic youth breaking through perceived limitations. My goal was always to defy those expectations and achieve more.”

Joining the Navy four years ago, Lt. Galvan now serves as a surface warfare officer. “My grandparents’ military service, one in World War II and the other in Vietnam, inspired me to serve,” he says. “When I received my acceptance letter to Officer Candidate School, it was a moment of immense pride and excitement.”

The USS Barry, a multi-mission destroyer equipped with tomahawk missiles, torpedoes, and a phalanx close-in weapons system, is home to over 300 sailors, each with specialized roles vital to the ship's operations. Galvan takes pride in his accomplishments, including earning his Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) pin—a symbol of rigorous training and dedication.

“I’m most proud of earning my SWO pin and witnessing the growth of sailors who, despite challenging circumstances, rise to become exemplary members of the Navy,” he says. “Seeing them develop and excel is incredibly rewarding.”

As a member of the Navy, Lt. Galvan plays a crucial role in ensuring global security and prosperity. “Serving in the Navy means being part of an organization that operates around the world, supporting international stability and safety,” he explains. “It’s an honor to contribute to such a significant mission.”

Grateful for the support of those who helped him along the way, Lt. Galvan acknowledges his parents, mentors, and friends. “I owe a lot to my parents for their sacrifices and to Lt. Cmdr. Josh Malia and Albert Meza for their guidance and mentorship,” he says. “Their support has been instrumental in my journey.”
