Despite a slight dip in the total number of productions, the financial boost to the Houston economy is nothing short of spectacular. In just the first half of the year, film productions assisted by the Houston Film Commission generated an astonishing $65.6 million, a staggering 259.6% increase from the mere $18.2 million recorded during the same period in 2023.

While the Houston Film Commission facilitated 93 film and video projects across 835 shooting days in the first six months of 2024—down from 140 projects and 878 shooting days last year—the size and scale of the productions have significantly enhanced the local economic impact. “Though we’ve assisted fewer overall productions so far this year, the sheer size of the productions that have filmed in recent months have far outweighed what we experienced in the first half of 2023,” said Alfred Cervantes, executive director of the Houston Film Commission. 

Prominent projects, such as the second season of Mo, a Netflix series featuring comedian Mo Amer, have contributed heavily to this surge. When large-scale productions come to town, the economic ripple effects are felt throughout the community—think jobs for local crew members, business for hotels and restaurants, and a buzz that attracts even more attention to Houston as a prime filming location.

The number of production presentations made to producers has surged by 22% this year, and marketing events have increased by 16%.
