In a significant boost to green transportation, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is awarding $7.9 million to Alief Independent School District (ISD) as part of President Biden’s Investing in America initiative. This grant will fund the acquisition of 20 cutting-edge electric school buses, marking a transformative step toward a more sustainable future for the district.
The announcement will be celebrated on August 16, 2024, at the Marshall Center for Advanced Careers, located at 12160 Richmond Avenue, Houston, TX 77082. The event will be graced by Dr. Earthea Nance, EPA Region 6 Administrator, alongside Representative Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07), Alief ISD Superintendent Dr. Anthony Mays, and Chief Communications & PR Administrator Kristyn Cathey.
Dr. Nance will lead the festivities, showcasing the EPA’s commitment to reducing emissions and promoting clean energy solutions in our schools. “This grant represents a pivotal moment in our effort to enhance air quality and ensure a healthier environment for our children,” said Dr. Nance.
The event, scheduled from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM CST, will offer media representatives the opportunity to RSVP and join a "ride along" in one of the new electric buses following the speaking program. This hands-on experience will provide a firsthand look at the innovative technology now available to Alief ISD students.
“The introduction of electric buses into our fleet is a testament to our dedication to sustainability and our students’ future,” stated Superintendent Dr. Mays. “We are excited to lead by example in embracing greener technologies.”
Kristyn Cathey, Alief ISD's Chief Communications & PR Administrator, emphasized the district's commitment to leveraging this grant for a cleaner, greener, and more efficient transportation system.
