Houston Native and Texas Tech Alum Lt. Daniel Galvan: A Legacy of Service and Leadership in the U.S. Navy

Lt. Daniel Galvan, a proud Houston native and Texas Tech University graduate, is making waves in the U.S. Navy as a dedicated surface warfare officer aboard the USS Barry, a formidable Navy destroyer. Currently stationed at Naval Station Everett in Washington, the USS Barry is undergoing routine maintenance in a Seattle shipyard, where Galvan and his fellow sailors are hard at work ensuring the ship's readiness for its next mission.

Galvan’s journey to the Navy began four years ago, inspired by his family's deep-rooted military heritage. “My grandparents served in the Army, one during World War II and one during Vietnam,” Galvan shared. “I always wanted to serve my country, and the military was the best outlet for me to serve. I wanted to stand for what I thought was right.”

After earning a bachelor's degree in construction management from Texas Tech University in 2017, Galvan was thrilled to receive his acceptance letter to Officer Candidate School, marking the start of his military career. As a surface warfare officer, Galvan has embraced the challenges and responsibilities of leading sailors on one of the Navy's most versatile warships.

The USS Barry, a multi-mission destroyer equipped with tomahawk missiles, torpedoes, guns, and a phalanx close-in weapons system, operates independently or as part of a larger naval group. With over 300 specialized sailors on board, each plays a critical role in maintaining the ship's operational readiness and ensuring the security of global commerce and undersea communications.

Adm. Lisa Franchetti, chief of naval operations, emphasized the Navy's commitment to its mission and the importance of its sailors: “We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day. Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”

For Lt. Galvan, earning his Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) pin stands out as a significant achievement in his career. “It took a lot of hard work, countless hours of studying, and practicing to earn my SWO pin,” Galvan recalled. “Seeing junior sailors develop and become people who are dedicated and have the drive to be someone greater than who they were before is incredibly rewarding.”

Grateful for the support he's received along the way, Galvan expressed deep appreciation for his mentors and family. “I want to thank my parents for their unwavering support and dedication. I also want to thank Lt. Cmdr. Josh Malia for being a great mentor and Albert Meza for guiding me through the military application process.”

Lt. Daniel Galvan's story is a testament to the power of dedication, leadership, and the pursuit of excellence. As he continues to serve in the U.S. Navy, Galvan's commitment to his country and the values he upholds remain a source of pride for both Houston and the nation.
