Rodney Ellis, Commissioner for Harris County Precinct One, announced today that he will seek a third term in 2024. Commissioner Ellis was first elected to Commissioners Court in 2016 and sworn in on January 1, 2017.
Commissioner Ellis made the following statement:
"When I came to Commissioners Court in 2017, I was the only Democrat, the only progressive, and the only commissioner ready to prioritize social, racial, economic, climate and criminal justice – and equity – for all Harris County residents.
"What a difference seven years has made. Together with my Democratic colleagues, we changed the composition of the court and the direction of our county government.
"I am proud to have championed reforms to make Harris County safer for all of us, reduce crime and mass incarceration, and fix our broken justice system, including: misdemeanor bail reform; innovative public health strategies proven to reduce gun violence; targeted mental health interventions; shelters for those experiencing homelessness, and more.
"I am thankful to have helped make Harris County more affordable, working to give every resident a stable foundation and a clear path to build a better life for themselves and their families.
"In that spirit, I led the fight to reduce income inequality, created good paying jobs and worker safety, created job training and apprenticeship programs, and leveled the playing field with equitable economic policies.
"We have increased access to safe, stable, and affordable housing and increased tax breaks for seniors and the disabled so they won’t get priced out of their homes. We’re investing in our future with expanded access to childcare, early education, and youth enrichment programs.
"We’re giving Harris County families the building blocks they need to prosper.
"That’s a lot, but we’re just getting started. The truth is, we can’t stop – not until, in the words of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 'justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.'”
"That’s my goal, and if Precinct One voters see fit to give me another term, I’ll continue to devote my skills and experience achieving it."
